Can NotebookLM summarize a PDF?
One sentence: yes, upload any PDF with selectable text as a source and NotebookLM generates an automatic summary immediately, plus whatever more specific summary you ask for in chat.
Yes. Upload a PDF as a source in NotebookLM and it automatically generates a summary with key topics the moment it finishes processing. For a more specific summary, ask directly in chat: it can summarize the whole document, a particular section, or synthesize across several PDFs at once, each claim cited to the exact page.
The automatic summary
The moment a PDF finishes importing, click it in the Sources panel and NotebookLM shows a Source guide: an automatic summary plus a list of key topics, generated without you asking for anything. This is the fastest way to get oriented in a long document before deciding whether to read it in full.
Getting a better summary than the default
The automatic summary is generic by design. For something more useful, ask in chat with a specific shape in mind:
- "Summarize this for someone who will not read it: the core argument, the three strongest pieces of evidence, and the weakest point."
- "Summarize only the methodology and results sections, skip the introduction."
- "Give me a one-paragraph summary and a five-bullet summary, so I can pick whichever fits."
- "What would someone who disagrees with this document's conclusion say, and why?"
Summarizing several PDFs at once
Upload multiple PDFs and ask for a synthesis across all of them rather than one at a time: "Summarize the common themes across these five reports, and note where they disagree." This is where NotebookLM genuinely outperforms reading each PDF separately, since it holds all of them in context simultaneously and can point out contradictions a person skimming five documents in sequence would likely miss.
When a PDF summary comes back wrong or empty
The usual cause is a scanned PDF with no selectable text layer, which NotebookLM cannot read without running OCR first, or a file over the roughly 500,000-word size cap. Both are covered with fixes in NotebookLM not working and the word limit article.
Getting the summary out of NotebookLM
Save a good summary with Save to note, and if you want it as a proper document, generate a full study guide from the same PDF or export the chat answer directly to PDF or Word with citations intact.
People also ask
How long of a PDF can NotebookLM summarize?
Up to roughly 500,000 words or 200MB, with no separate page limit. A several-hundred-page PDF is fine as long as it stays under that word count.
Does NotebookLM's PDF summary include citations?
Yes, when you ask for a summary in chat, each claim carries a citation pointing to the page or passage it came from. The automatic source guide summary does not include inline citations.
Can NotebookLM summarize a scanned PDF?
Only if the scan has a text layer already, either from the original file or added afterward with OCR. A pure image scan with no embedded text will not summarize correctly.
