What is NotebookLM?
One sentence: NotebookLM is an AI notebook that reads the documents you give it and answers questions only from them, citing exactly where each answer came from.
NotebookLM is a free AI research tool from Google that answers questions using only the documents, websites, videos or audio you upload to it, rather than general internet knowledge. Every answer includes a citation pointing to the exact passage it came from. It can also turn your sources into podcast-style audio, mind maps, study guides and quizzes.
Who built it
NotebookLM comes from Google Labs. The team behind it includes product manager Raiza Martin and science writer Steven Johnson, and it runs on Google's Gemini model. It launched as an experiment in 2023, dropped its experimental label in October 2024, and has been adding features steadily since, most famously the two-host Audio Overview podcast feature that went viral in late 2024.
What makes it different from a normal chatbot
A general chatbot like ChatGPT or Gemini answers mostly from what it learned during training, plus anything you paste into the conversation. NotebookLM works the other way around: you give it a fixed set of sources, a PDF, a website, a YouTube video, a recording, and it answers strictly from those. Ask something the sources do not cover, and it typically says so instead of guessing. That single design choice is the whole point of the product, and it is why people trust it with research, contracts and lecture notes in a way they would not trust a general chatbot's unsourced claim.
What you can actually do with it
- Ask questions with citations. Every answer links back to the source passage it used, so you can verify it in one click.
- Generate an Audio Overview. Two AI hosts discuss your sources in a genuinely listenable podcast format.
- Build study material. Study guides, flashcards, quizzes and mind maps, all generated from your own documents.
- Research the open web. Deep Research browses and imports cited sources from a description of what you need.
