Perplexity Max costs ten times more than Pro, and the browser that used to justify the price went free three months later
Perplexity Max is $200 a month, the same price as ChatGPT Pro's top tier and Claude's Max 20x plan. When it launched in July 2025, its headline perk was exclusive early access to the Comet browser. That browser became free for everyone in October 2025. So what does $200 a month actually buy now, and is it the same thing most 2026-dated comparison articles describe? We checked Perplexity's own pricing documentation directly, rather than trust a table that might be copying numbers from before the Comet change.
Perplexity Max is $200/month or $2,000/year (annual billing is web-only). Per Perplexity's own current plan page, it adds five things over Pro: priority access to new frontier models, extended limits on Create files and apps (the renamed Labs), 10,000 monthly Computer credits, Model Council, and priority support. Max Assistant on Comet and the Brain memory system (research preview) round out the list.
Comet, Max's original exclusive perk, has been free for everyone since 2 October 2025. What Max still keeps on Comet is Max Assistant, a "next-level mode" with priority access to browser agent queries, not browser access itself. Comparison articles that still describe Comet itself as a Max-only perk, or call this feature a generic "background assistant," are describing an October 2025 name Perplexity has since dropped.
Perplexity's own pricing page doesn't publish exact search or Research caps for Pro or Max, only vague "average use" and "advanced use" labels. Only the Enterprise tiers get hard numbers (400 Pro Searches/week on Enterprise Pro, 4,000/week on Enterprise Max).
Unlike ChatGPT Pro and Claude Max, Perplexity has no cheaper entry tier. OpenAI and Anthropic both sell a $100/month version of their top plan (5x usage) alongside the $200 version (20x). Perplexity Max is $200 flat, or you stay on $20 Pro.
What $200 a month actually gets you
Perplexity Max costs $200/month or $2,000/year, confirmed directly from Perplexity's own help center article. Annual billing is only available through the web app, not mobile. Max includes everything Pro has, plus five things Pro doesn't: priority access to newly released frontier models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and others; extended limits on Create files and apps (Perplexity's February 2026 rename of Labs, for building reports, spreadsheets, and small web apps); 10,000 Computer credits per month for agentic tasks; Model Council, launched the same week, a side-by-side multi-model comparison tool; and priority customer support.
There is also a separate Enterprise Max tier, priced around $325 per seat per month, aimed at teams rather than individuals. Some pricing breakdowns conflate it with consumer Max or only mention one of the two, which is worth watching for if you're comparing prices across different articles.
The Comet pivot most 2026 comparisons still miss
When Perplexity launched Max on 2 July 2025 at $200/month, its signature exclusive was early access to Comet, Perplexity's agentic web browser. That exclusivity lasted three months. On 2 October 2025, Perplexity made Comet free for everyone worldwide, the same week it introduced a narrower Max-only feature it originally called the background assistant: a dashboard of AI agents that keep working on multitasking and automation jobs while you do something else, plus the highest weekly ceiling on Comet's agent queries of any tier. Perplexity has since renamed that feature Max Assistant on Comet, described on its current plan page as a "next-level mode, powered by cutting-edge reasoning models that intelligently route every request."
That distinction matters because a browser you can download for free is a very different pitch than a browser you pay $200 a month to access. If an article you're reading describes Comet itself as a Max perk without mentioning the October 2025 change, it's describing a state of the product that no longer exists.
Perplexity Pro vs Max: what actually changes
Pro costs $20/month. Here's what moving to Max's $200/month actually changes, based on Perplexity's own documentation rather than a static feature-comparison table that may not reflect the current product:
Feature Pro ($20/mo) Max ($200/mo)
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Pro Search Unlimited Unlimited (same)
Create files and apps Capped (not published) Extended limits
Model access Standard Priority access to new models
Computer credits Lower allotment 10,000/month
Model Council Not included Included
Comet browser Free (same as everyone) Free + Max Assistant
Comet agent queries Standard weekly limit Highest weekly limit
Brain memory (research preview) Not included Included
Support Standard Priority
Billing Monthly or annual Monthly or annual (web only)Pro Search, the basic query-and-cite feature, is unlimited on both plans. Max doesn't buy you more of the thing most people use Perplexity for daily. The real gap is in Create files and apps, Perplexity's longer-running agentic mode (renamed from Labs in February 2026) that gathers dozens of sources and builds out a report, spreadsheet, or small app rather than answering one question.
How many searches do you actually get? Perplexity won't say
This is the part most comparison articles skip. We checked Perplexity's own plan-comparison page directly, and for individual Pro and Max subscribers, Perplexity does not publish a number. Pro Search is listed only as "weekly limits (average use)" for Pro and "weekly limits (advanced use)" for Max. Create files and apps queries are listed the same vague way: Max simply promises "extended limits" over Pro, with no published figure for either tier.
The only tiers that get hard numbers on that same page are Enterprise: Enterprise Pro is capped at 400 Pro Searches per week and 80 Research queries per month; Enterprise Max goes to 4,000 Pro Searches per week and 800 Research queries per month, a flat 10x jump that mirrors the price gap between the consumer and enterprise plans. If a 10x enterprise jump is any guide, consumer Max likely sits meaningfully above Pro too, but Perplexity has chosen not to commit to a number for individual subscribers, which makes Max's "extended limits" claim harder to verify than it sounds, since there's no published Pro baseline to compare it against.
What 10,000 Computer credits actually buys
Computer credits power Create files and apps tasks and other agentic features; regular Perplexity Ask searches don't touch them. Max subscribers get 10,000 credits a month, and Perplexity's own documentation states credit consumption "varies based on task complexity" without publishing a rate card for what a given task costs. That's a meaningful gap if you're trying to budget usage: a simple one-page summary and a multi-step data-analysis job pulling from dozens of sources don't cost the same, but there's no way to know the difference in advance from Perplexity's own materials.
Max also gets early access to Brain, a research-preview memory system Perplexity launched in June 2026 for Max and Enterprise Max subscribers. Brain logs what its Computer agent did on past tasks, which sources it used, and what corrections you made, then synthesizes that into a context graph it loads before future runs. Perplexity's own first-party testing reported a 25% gain in answer correctness and a 13% cost reduction on repeated, history-dependent workflows, numbers that have not been independently reproduced.
Perplexity Max vs ChatGPT Pro vs Claude Max
The most useful comparison isn't Max against Pro, it's Max against the other two $200-class plans on the market, since that's genuinely the price bracket a Max buyer is choosing between. Both of Perplexity's competitors restructured their top tier in the past year to add a cheaper entry point; Perplexity hasn't.
Plan Price Structure
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Perplexity Max $200/mo flat One tier only. $2,000/yr (web only).
ChatGPT Pro $100 or $200/mo Two tiers: 5x or 20x Plus usage.
Claude Max $100 or $200/mo Two tiers: 5x or 20x Pro usage.OpenAI added a $100/month ChatGPT Pro tier (5x Plus usage) alongside its original $200 tier (20x usage), explicitly to compete with Anthropic's two-tier Max structure. Claude's Max 5x ($100/mo) and Max 20x ($200/mo) work the same way: a rolling 5-hour usage window at five or twenty times Pro's allowance. Perplexity sells one tier at $200, with no $100 middle option between it and the $20 Pro plan. If your actual usage would fit a 5x tier, ChatGPT and Claude both let you pay $100 for that; Perplexity doesn't offer the equivalent, so you either stay on $20 Pro or jump straight to $200 Max.

Capability-wise, the three tools aren't really substitutes for the same job. Perplexity Max's strength is live-web research with citations attached to every claim. Claude Max's strength is long-document and codebase work, backed by a large context window and Claude Code access bundled into the subscription. ChatGPT Pro is the most general-purpose of the three: voice, image generation, Sora video, and the broadest agent tooling in one place. Several independent comparisons land on the same practical suggestion: stacking Claude Max and ChatGPT Pro at a combined $200-400 covers more ground for most people than Perplexity Max alone, unless live-web research with citations is specifically the bottleneck in your workflow.
Who should actually pay for Max
- Skip Max if you use Perplexity for occasional sourced answers rather than daily heavy research. Pro's unlimited Pro Search already covers that, and the $180/month difference buys Create files and apps headroom you won't use.
- Skip Max if you want one general-purpose AI assistant for writing, coding, and research together. ChatGPT Pro or Claude Max cover more ground per dollar for that use case.
- Consider Max if you regularly hit Pro's Create files and apps caps building reports, spreadsheets, or multi-step research projects and feel the limit in practice.
- Consider Max if Comet's Max Assistant automation (running multitasking agent jobs while you work on something else) is something you'd actually use weekly, not just try once.
- Consider Max if Model Council's side-by-side multi-model answers, with disagreement flagged automatically, is valuable for fact-sensitive work where you'd otherwise manually cross-check one model's answer against another.
Where this fits next to Gemini Notebook
Perplexity and Gemini Notebook solve different problems even though both get pitched as "AI research tools." Perplexity's Research and Create files and apps modes search the live web, pulling from dozens of external sources you didn't choose, which is useful for discovery but means it can occasionally cite something that turns out to be wrong, since it's reasoning over the open web rather than a fixed set of documents. Gemini Notebook only works from sources you deliberately upload, which makes it slower to start but means every answer traces back to something you chose and can re-check yourself.
A workflow several independent comparisons converge on: use Perplexity, Pro is usually enough, Max mainly raises your Research ceiling, to gather and vet sources from the open web, then upload the ones that hold up into Gemini Notebook for grounded synthesis, audio overviews, or study materials. Max's extra Research headroom matters specifically for that source-gathering stage of a research project, not as a replacement for Notebook's document-grounded synthesis.
People also ask
Is Perplexity Max worth $200 a month?
Only if you regularly hit Perplexity Pro's Create files and apps limits, or specifically want Model Council and Comet's Max Assistant. For occasional sourced search, Pro's unlimited Pro Search at $20/month covers the same core feature Max doesn't improve on.
What's the difference between Perplexity Pro and Max?
Pro Search is unlimited on both. Max adds extended limits on Create files and apps (Pro's caps aren't published either way), 10,000 monthly Computer credits, priority access to new models, Model Council, Comet's Max Assistant with the highest agent-query ceiling, and priority support.
Does Perplexity Max include the Comet browser?
Comet itself has been free for everyone since 2 October 2025. Max's remaining Comet-specific perk, now called Max Assistant, plus the highest weekly limit on Comet's agent queries, not access to the browser.
How does Perplexity Max compare to ChatGPT Pro?
Both cost $200/month at the top tier, but ChatGPT Pro also offers a cheaper $100/month tier at 5x Plus usage; Perplexity Max has no equivalent middle option. ChatGPT Pro is the more general-purpose tool (voice, image and video generation, broader agents); Perplexity Max is stronger specifically for live-web research with citations.
Is Perplexity Max unlimited?
Not entirely. Pro Search is unlimited on Pro and Max alike. Create files and apps gets "extended limits" on Max, not a stated unlimited allowance, and Computer credits are capped at 10,000/month with consumption varying by task complexity, so a handful of complex agentic tasks can use a meaningful share of the monthly allotment.
