Google AI Plus vs Pro: what actually changes, and the naming confusion that trips up half the buyers

Google now sells four different "AI" tiers under names that overlap with an older storage plan most people already had, and the comparisons ranking for "google ai plus vs pro" disagree with each other on the price. We checked Google's own current pages directly: Google AI Plus is $4.99/month with 400GB of storage, and Google AI Pro is $19.99/month with 5TB, a real gap in both cost and capability, not a rounding difference. Here's what each tier actually gets you, cross-checked against Google's own support documentation rather than a third-party table that might be from May.

Quick answer

Google AI Plus is $4.99/month: 400GB storage, Gemini Notebook access with up to 100 sources per notebook and 200 notebooks, and no ability to buy extra AI credit top-ups. Google AI Pro is $19.99/month: 5TB storage, up to 300 sources per notebook and 500 notebooks, a full 1M-token context window instead of Plus's smaller one, and the ability to purchase top-up credits.

Google AI Ultra starts at $99.99/month and comes in two sub-tiers ($99.99 and $199.99); we cover that split separately in our Google AI Ultra pricing breakdown since it's a bigger decision on its own.

"Google AI Plus/Pro" is not the same thing as "Google One Premium." Google's own support forums are full of people confused about billing between the two, since Premium is an older, AI-free storage-only plan that some of these new plans supersede or bundle with.

Google has been phasing out fixed daily limits in favor of compute-based quotas that scale with prompt complexity: the general Gemini app moved first, in May 2026, and Gemini Notebook specifically followed on 2 September 2026. Any article, including older versions of our own, that gives you a flat "X per day" number for Deep Research or Audio Overviews is describing a system Google has since retired for that product.

Price and storage, verified directly

Search results for this comparison currently disagree on Plus's price: some say $4.99, others $7.99, one popular figure floating around says "$8." We went to Google's own current plans page rather than trust any of them, and as of this check, the US pricing is unambiguous.

Google One's official Google AI plans page showing Google AI Plus at $4.99/mo with 400GB storage, Google AI Pro at $19.99/mo with 5TB storage, and Google AI Ultra starting at $99.99/mo with 20TB storage.
one.google.com, September 2026.
Tier Price/mo Storage
------------------------------------------
Google AI Plus $4.99 400 GB (or 2TB on some bundles)
Google AI Pro $19.99 5 TB (or 10TB on some bundles)
Google AI Ultra $99.99+ 20 TB+ (two sub-tiers, see linked guide)

The $7.99 figure some articles still show is a stale price point from earlier in 2026, before Google cut Plus to $4.99 in June. The "5TB or 10TB depending on membership tier" and "400GB or 2TB" ranges come directly from Google's own current help-center pages; Google doesn't explain the split on those pages, but it most likely reflects an older, higher-storage membership SKU that got folded into the current Plus/Pro branding rather than a byproduct of annual versus monthly billing.

Which Gemini model you actually get

This is the least consistent part of Google's own messaging. The general Gemini Apps limits help page states that every tier, including accounts with no paid plan at all, runs on the same underlying model, described there simply as "Gemini 3 Pro," with the difference being a usage multiplier (roughly 2x for Plus, 4x for Pro, and up to 20x for the top Ultra tier) and context window (32K free, 128K Plus, 1M Pro and Ultra). But Google's own regional subscriptions page describes Pro and Ultra subscribers specifically as getting "Gemini 3.1 Pro," a newer point release, while not making the same claim for Plus. Put plainly: Google's own pages don't fully agree with each other on whether Plus gets the same point-release model as Pro, only that Plus gets less of it (a smaller context window, a lower usage multiplier). If getting the newest possible model matters more to you than raw usage volume, Pro is the safer bet until Google clarifies this on a single page.

Gemini Notebook: sources, notebooks, and what compute-based limits changed

If Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM) is the reason you're comparing these two tiers, the concrete numbers, verified against Google's own current Plus and Pro benefits pages, are these:

Gemini Notebook Google AI Plus Google AI Pro
--------------------------------------------------------
Notebooks 200 500
Sources per notebook 100 300
Google's official 'Use Google AI Plus benefits' support page, listing Gemini Notebook among included features and stating that AI credits aren't available for purchase to Google AI Plus members.
support.google.com, September 2026.

For everything else Gemini Notebook gates by tier, Audio and Video Overviews, Deep Research runs, Studio outputs, we keep a single consolidated table current across all five paid tiers in our Gemini Notebook limits guide, since repeating the full table here would duplicate it. The short version: Pro roughly triples Plus's notebook and source caps, in line with the price gap.

What's genuinely new since most competing comparisons were last updated: Google shifted Gemini's usage system away from fixed daily counts to a compute-based quota that refreshes every five hours and scales with prompt complexity, chat length, and which features you use, a change we covered in detail in our usage-limits change article. The practical effect for this comparison is that older, specific numbers you'll see quoted elsewhere, "20 Deep Research runs a day on Pro," for instance, describe a system Google no longer runs. Google's current help documentation deliberately avoids restating a fixed daily count for Deep Research, image generation, or video generation; it points users to a personalized usage dashboard instead. Treat any article, ours included, that gives you a bare number for these features as describing a snapshot that may already be stale.

Deep Research: two features share one name

One genuine source of confusion across competing coverage: "Deep Research" inside the general Gemini app (the multi-step web-research feature) and Gemini Notebook's own internal Deep Research (which researches and adds sources to a specific notebook) are two separate features with two separate quotas, both tier-gated, both frequently cited under the same name. If you see conflicting Deep Research numbers between two articles, including ours and a competitor's, check which product each one is actually describing before assuming one of them made an error.

The "no top-up credits" restriction on Plus

Google's own Plus benefits page states directly: "AI credits aren't available for purchase to Google AI Plus members." If you're on Plus and hit a wall mid-month on Flow video generation, Flow Music, or another credit-metered feature, there is no option to buy more until your plan resets; Pro and Ultra subscribers can purchase additional credits in supported regions. If you expect to burn through your monthly allotment consistently rather than occasionally, that asymmetry is worth weighing against the sticker-price gap on its own.

"Google One Premium" is not "Google AI Plus" or "Google AI Pro"

The single most repeated confusion across Google's own support-forum threads isn't about features at all, it's about naming. Google One Premium is an older, storage-only plan (2TB, no Gemini access) that predates the current Google AI Plus/Pro/Ultra lineup. Multiple live threads in Google's own community forums are from people who signed up for one plan, see the other name somewhere in their billing or account settings, and assume something is broken. If your account shows "Google One Premium" language anywhere, you very likely don't have Gemini Notebook access at all yet, you'd need to specifically upgrade to a Google AI plan for that, and the storage-only Premium plan is being phased into the AI plans over time rather than sold as a separate new signup.

A second, older naming collision worth flagging: before the current restructure, Google sold a separate product called NotebookLM Plus (part of the old Google One AI Premium bundle), which is not the same thing as today's Google AI Plus tier. If you're reading an older review that quotes "NotebookLM Plus" limits, those numbers belong to a now-retired plan structure, not the current Google AI Plus tier covered in this article.

Which one should you actually buy

  • You're a casual Gemini Notebook user with a handful of source documents. Plus covers 100 sources per notebook and 200 notebooks; for most students or individual researchers, that ceiling is rarely the binding constraint. Save the $15/month.
  • You regularly work with large source sets, long documents, or multiple concurrent research projects. Pro's 300-source, 500-notebook ceiling and full 1M-token context window are the real reason to upgrade, not the storage bump.
  • You need the newest Gemini point release the day it ships. Google's own pages suggest Pro and Ultra get priority access to new model versions like 3.1 Pro; Plus's model-version guarantee is less clearly stated.
  • You regularly max out credit-metered features (Flow video, Flow Music) before the month resets. Only Pro and Ultra let you buy top-up credits; Plus has a hard stop with no purchase option.
  • You need Deep Think, Project Genie, or the highest usage multipliers. Those are Ultra-exclusive; see our Ultra tier breakdown for the $99.99 vs $199.99 decision specifically.

People also ask

Does Google AI Plus give you the same Gemini model as Google AI Pro?

Google's own pages don't fully agree. Its general limits help page says all tiers run "Gemini 3 Pro" with different usage multipliers and context windows (128K for Plus vs 1M for Pro/Ultra); its subscriptions page separately describes Pro and Ultra as getting "Gemini 3.1 Pro" specifically, without making the same claim for Plus. Pro is the safer choice if getting the latest point release matters to you.

What's the difference between Google One Premium and Google AI Plus or Pro?

Google One Premium is an older, storage-only plan (2TB, no Gemini access) that predates the current AI tier structure. If your account shows Premium, you likely don't have Gemini Notebook or other Gemini app benefits, those require a specific Google AI Plus, Pro, or Ultra plan.

How many sources per notebook do you get on Plus vs Pro?

Up to 100 sources per notebook on Google AI Plus, up to 300 on Google AI Pro, both figures confirmed directly on Google's own current benefits support pages. Notebook count caps are 200 (Plus) and 500 (Pro).

Can I buy extra AI credits on Google AI Plus?

No. Google's own support documentation states plainly that AI credits aren't available for purchase to Google AI Plus members. Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers can buy top-up credits in supported regions.

Did Google change Gemini's usage limits recently?

Yes. The general Gemini app moved to a compute-based quota that scales with prompt complexity in May 2026, and Gemini Notebook specifically followed on 2 September 2026, replacing its fixed daily counts with a quota that refreshes every five hours. Older articles quoting a flat "X per day" number for Deep Research or Audio Overviews are describing a system Google has since retired.

What happened to NotebookLM Plus?

NotebookLM Plus was part of an older Google One AI Premium bundle structure and is not the same product as today's Google AI Plus tier. If you see limits attributed to "NotebookLM Plus" in older coverage, they describe a retired plan, not the current Google AI Plus subscription.
