How to cancel a NotebookLM subscription

If you have been hunting for a cancel button inside your notebook, you will not find one. Nothing is billed by NotebookLM itself — the charge on your card belongs to a Google AI plan, and it is cancelled somewhere else entirely.

NotebookLM was renamed Gemini Notebook in July 2026. Billing works the same under either name — and under both names, the subscription is not really a notebook subscription.

Quick answer

There is no standalone NotebookLM subscription. The paid features come from a Google AI plan (AI Plus, AI Pro or AI Ultra), which is billed through Google One. Cancel it at one.google.comSettingsCancel membership. You keep the paid features until the end of the period you already paid for, then drop to the free tier — your notebooks are not deleted.

Why there is no cancel button in your notebook

This is the part that sends people in circles. Gemini Notebook has no billing screen of its own, because it never charged you. Google sells one bundle — a Google AI plan — and higher notebook limits are just one of the things inside that bundle, alongside a better Gemini model, extra Drive storage and video generation. So the cancel button lives with the bundle, in Google One, not in the product you were using when you noticed the charge.

It also means cancelling affects more than your notebooks. The same click removes the model upgrades and drops your storage allowance. Worth knowing before you click, especially if you signed up for the storage and forgot the AI came with it.

Cancel it on the web

  1. Go to one.google.com and check you are signed in to the account that is being charged — not another one you happen to be logged into.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Choose Cancel membership. Google shows a screen listing what you are giving up.
  4. Confirm with Cancel membership again. It is not cancelled until you pass that second screen.

There is a second door to the same place: at gemini.google.com, open Settings and helpManage subscription. It hands you straight to the Google One settings above.

If you subscribed on a phone, cancel where you paid

A subscription bought inside the iPhone or Android app is billed by Apple or Google Play, and the web cancel flow will not touch it. Cancel it in the store that took the money:

  • iPhone or iPad — Settings app → tap your name → Subscriptions → pick the Google One entry → Cancel Subscription.
  • Android — Play Store → your profile picture → Payments & subscriptionsSubscriptions → pick Google One → Cancel subscription.

If one.google.com tells you the plan is managed elsewhere, this is why. Follow where it points rather than trying again on the web.

The trial that will not cancel on its own

There is a specific trap worth knowing about, because it catches people who did everything right. If you already had a paid Google One storage plan and then accepted a free AI Pro trial on top of it, the trial can be difficult to cancel as a separate line item — the cancel option applies to the membership as a whole, and users have reported being billed at full price when the trial ended.

If that is you

Check the renewal date on your Google One settings page now rather than on the day it bills. If you cannot find a way to drop only the AI portion, the workaround people have used is to cancel the whole membership and resubscribe to the storage plan you actually wanted. Do that with a few days in hand, not the night before.

What you lose, and what stays

Cancelling is a downgrade, not a deletion. Your notebooks, sources and saved notes stay where they are. What changes is the ceiling you work under — the free tier allows 100 notebooks, 50 sources per notebook, 50 chat queries a day and 3 Audio Overviews a day. If you were on Pro you had roughly ten times that headroom on chats, so heavy days will start hitting a wall.

Storage is the piece that surprises people. Dropping back to the free 15 GB does not delete anything, but if what you already have stored is over that line, Google stops accepting new uploads — Gmail will not take incoming mail and Drive will not sync. Nothing is erased at that moment, though content can eventually be removed if you sit over quota for around two years. If you are near the limit, clear space before the plan ends rather than after.

Refunds

Cancelling stops the next charge; it does not claw back the current one. Google's standard position is that you keep access for the rest of the period you have paid for, and partial months are not refunded as a matter of course. If you were charged unexpectedly — a trial you thought you had cancelled, or a renewal you did not notice — you can still ask, through Google One support rather than any notebook screen. Ask promptly; the case is easier to make within a few days of the charge.

Before you cancel, check you actually need to

Most of what people use Gemini Notebook for sits inside the free tier comfortably. Fifty chat queries a day is a lot of questions, and three Audio Overviews a day is more than most people generate in a week. If the plan is only earning its keep on occasional heavy days, cancelling and resubscribing for the month you need it is cheaper than paying year-round. Our free versus paid breakdown has the limits side by side if you want to check your own usage against them first.

People also ask

Where is the cancel button in NotebookLM?

There isn't one, and that is not an oversight. Gemini Notebook does not bill you — the paid tier comes from a Google AI plan managed in Google One, so cancellation happens at one.google.com under Settings.

Will I lose my notebooks if I cancel?

No. Notebooks, sources and notes stay in your account. You drop to the free tier's limits — 100 notebooks, 50 sources each, 50 chats and 3 Audio Overviews a day — but nothing is deleted for cancelling.

Does cancelling take effect immediately?

No. You keep the paid features until the end of the billing period you have already paid for, and the downgrade happens at the renewal date instead of a new charge.

Why is my plan still showing after I cancelled?

Two common reasons. Either you are seeing the paid features because the period you paid for has not ended yet, or you cancelled while signed into a different Google account than the one being billed. Check which account the charge is on before cancelling again.

Can I get a refund for the current month?

Not automatically — cancelling stops the next payment rather than refunding the current one. You can request a refund through Google One support for unexpected charges, and doing so within a few days of the charge gives the request the best chance.
