Google is replacing Gemini Gems with Skills: here's what's confirmed, what's rumored, and who actually has to pay
Skills started rolling out in the Gemini app on 13 October 2026, the first visible step in Google quietly retiring Gems, the custom-chatbot feature it shipped just over a year ago. Google's own posts give real dates for when Gems stop working, but they're split across two blog posts that most coverage hasn't reconciled, and a good chunk of what's circulating about who has to pay for Skills is wrong. Here's what Google has actually confirmed, what's still just an app-code leak, and what to do with your existing Gems before the migration starts for real.
Skills began rolling out in the Gemini app on 13 October 2026, expected to finish by mid-November. Your existing Gems keep working through that window; Google says they'll move into the Gemini app's Settings panel on 17 November 2026, and personal-account Gems aren't given a hard cutoff beyond that in either of Google's own posts.
Business and Enterprise Workspace accounts get a published sunset date: no sooner than 1 March 2027. Education accounts get no sooner than 1 June 2027. Workspace's own rollout of Skills, separately, just slipped past its original 12/19 October targets with no new date given.
Skills in a normal Gemini chat cost nothing extra: no subscription required. The Pro/Ultra-only claim repeated across several tech sites applies specifically to Skills used inside Gemini's Spark agent tasks, not to ordinary /-invoked skills in chat. This distinction is where most existing coverage goes wrong.
One widely-repeated claim is NOT in Google's own posts: that personal accounts lost the ability to create or edit new Gems starting 13 October. That traces to an Android Authority app-code teardown, not to anything Google has stated. Treat it as unconfirmed.

What a Skill actually is, versus a Gem
A Gem was Gemini's version of a saved chatbot persona: open it from the sidebar, and it answers inside its own dedicated space using whatever instructions and files you gave it. Per Google's own description, a skill is different in kind, not just in name: "a set of instructions and preferences that teaches Gemini how to handle a specific type of task," invoked by typing / followed by the skill's name in any ordinary chat, or applied automatically when Gemini judges a prompt matches one. Skills can be stacked, more than one applied in the same conversation, something a Gem could never do since you could only have one open at a time. They're built on an open, Markdown-native SKILL.md file format, which is also why skills are portable: Google explicitly frames them as importable from other tools that use the same convention.
Functionally, a skill can still do what a Gem's core job was: custom instructions, plus attached reference files (a template, a style guide, a spreadsheet) that Gemini opens only when the task needs them. What it can't yet do, compared to a Gem, is trigger Gemini's bigger built-in tools: Canvas, Deep Research, Create video, Create music and Guided Learning aren't currently invokable from inside a skill, a tool-parity gap that shows up consistently across Google's own Workspace Studio documentation and independent coverage. If your Gems lean on those tools rather than plain instructions-plus-files, that's the part of this migration most likely to actually change how you work.
The real timeline, reconciled from Google's two posts
Date What happens Confirmed by
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5 Oct 2026 Skills begin rolling out in Workspace Google (30 Sept post)
12 Oct 2026 (target) Workspace Rapid Release completion Google, now delayed
13 Oct 2026 Skills begin rolling out in Gemini app Google (13 Oct post), on schedule
19 Oct 2026 (target) Workspace Scheduled Release start Google, now delayed
Mid-Nov 2026 (target) Gemini app Skills rollout completes Google (both posts)
17 Nov 2026 Gems move to Gemini app Settings panel Google (30 Sept post)
No sooner than 1 Mar 2027 Gems can no longer be created/edited/used Google (30 Sept post)
(Business/Enterprise) for Business & Enterprise Workspace
No sooner than 1 Jun 2027 Same restriction for Education accounts, Google (30 Sept post)
(Education) plus removal from Classroom/LTI tools
Google's 30 September post gives the Gem sunset dates above. Its 13
October follow-up confirms the Gemini-app timeline is on track and that
only the Workspace-side rollout has slipped, with no new date given. The thing worth clearing up: the delay announced on 13 October applies specifically to the Workspace rollout (the Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domain targets), not to the consumer Gemini-app timeline, which Google's own post explicitly says started on schedule that same day. Several articles covering this have conflated the two, reporting the whole migration as delayed when only one half of it slipped.
The subscription confusion, resolved
This is the single most inconsistent detail across existing coverage. Several outlets describe Skills as a Google AI Pro/Ultra feature, tied to the Spark tab. Google's own posts say the opposite for the base case: Skills in the Gemini app are available to "all Workspace customers and personal account users," full stop, with the only stated restriction being an age split, not a payment one ("skills in Workspace are available only to users over age 18; skills in the Gemini app will be available to users of all ages"). The likeliest reconciliation, consistent with how Gemini's Spark agent has been gated elsewhere: ordinary chat skills, invoked with / in a normal conversation, need no paid plan. The Pro/Ultra requirement some coverage describes applies specifically to Spark-specific tasks and scheduled automations, a different surface with its own separate access rules and regional exclusions (Spark itself isn't available in the EEA, Nigeria, or Switzerland). If you've read that Skills are Pro-only and assumed your free account won't get them, check the Gemini app directly before believing it.
What's confirmed to break, and what's just a leak
A few concrete breakage patterns show up in Google's own admin documentation and independent reporting, worth knowing before 17 November:
- Migrated Gems can land as inactive drafts. Per Google's admin migration guide, a Gem that migrates to a skill may arrive deactivated, requiring its original creator to manually reactivate it. For a Gem a team shares but nobody specifically owns, or one whose creator has since left the organization, that's a real way for something to silently stop working with nobody noticing.
- Workspace Studio flows built on "Ask a Gem" steps can't add new ones. Existing automations that already call a Gem keep running for now, but you can't add a new Gem-calling step to a flow going forward; the replacement is a skill-based step.
- No cross-surface sync. A skill created in the Gemini app doesn't appear in Workspace apps, and vice versa; Google states this directly in both posts. If you need the same skill in both places, you're building it twice.
- Sharing is live on one side only. Workspace already has a skill-builder in Google Docs that lets a team share a skill today. On the personal/Gemini-app side, sharing is explicitly not live yet. Google's 13 October post describes it as "coming in the coming weeks," alongside a promised Google Drive integration, with no date given for either.
Separately, treat the claim that personal accounts lost Gem-creation ability starting 13 October as unconfirmed. It originates from Android Authority's reading of Gemini's app code, not from anything in either of Google's own posts, which state only that Gems "can still create, edit, and use" their Gems until the 17 November Settings-panel move. App-code teardowns have been directionally right before, Android Authority's own earlier reporting is what first surfaced the Nov 17 date before Google confirmed it, so it's not a baseless rumor, but it's a leak, not an announcement. If your Gem-creation option disappears before Google says it should, that's worth a screenshot and a support ticket, not an assumption that it's expected behavior.
Does this touch Gemini Notebook or NotebookLM?
Not directly. Gems and skills are a different part of the Gemini app from Notebooks, and nothing in either Google post ties the Skills rollout to Gemini Notebook in any way. If you use Gemini Notebook alongside Gems, including attaching a notebook as a source inside Gemini, that workflow isn't part of this migration.
There is a separate, unrelated, and still-unresolved issue worth knowing about if you're in that position: a thread on Google's own AI developer forum documents consumer Gemini Pro users losing the ability to cite Gemini Notebook notebooks as sources, tracing back to around the 19 February 2026 Gemini 3.1 Pro update, with no Google acknowledgment as of the most recent posts in August. It predates the Skills announcement entirely and has nothing to do with it, but if your notebook-grounded Gemini answers have been acting up, that bug, not this migration, is the more likely explanation.
What to do before 17 November
- Back up any Gem instructions you'd hate to lose, by copying the persona/task/context/format text somewhere outside Gemini, before the automatic migration runs.
- If you share a Gem with a team, check who created it. Per Google's own admin guidance, only the original creator can reactivate a Gem that migrates as an inactive draft; if that person has left, flag it to your admin now rather than after it silently stops responding.
- If a Gem's whole value is triggering Canvas, Deep Research, or another big built-in tool, know that skills can't do that yet; plan to keep invoking that tool directly rather than expecting the migrated skill to replicate it.
- Don't panic-rebuild everything today. The Gemini-app migration isn't scheduled until 17 November, and Google has already revised dates once (an earlier app-code teardown suggested 20 October before Google settled on 17 November); treat the published dates as the best current estimate, not a drop-dead deadline to beat by weeks.
People also ask
When do Gemini Gems stop working?
It depends on your account type. Gems move into the Gemini app's Settings panel on 17 November 2026 for everyone, but keep working after that. A hard cutoff exists only for Workspace accounts: no sooner than 1 March 2027 for Business/Enterprise, and no sooner than 1 June 2027 for Education. Neither of Google's posts states a hard cutoff for personal accounts beyond the November date.
Will my Gems automatically become Skills?
Yes, Google describes an automatic migration, though it hasn't published the admin-facing details yet (promised "at least 30 days in advance"). Workspace-side Gems may migrate as inactive drafts needing the original creator to reactivate them; this isn't confirmed to also apply to personal accounts.
Do I have to pay for Gemini Skills?
Not for ordinary skills used with the / command in a normal chat. Google states these are available to all personal accounts and Workspace customers with no plan requirement. The Pro/Ultra gating some coverage describes applies specifically to Gemini's separate Spark agent tasks and scheduled automations, not to basic chat skills.
Can I still create new Gems right now?
Google's own posts say yes, through the 17 November Settings-panel move. A claim that personal-account Gem creation was disabled starting 13 October comes from an app-code teardown, not from Google, and should be treated as unconfirmed.
What can't Skills do that Gems could?
As of today, a skill can't trigger Gemini's bigger built-in tools, Canvas, Deep Research, Create video, Create music, or Guided Learning, the way a Gem could set one as a default. Skills also don't sync between the Gemini app and Workspace; you have to build the same skill twice if you need it in both places.
