NotebookLM pricing, explained with the actual numbers

NotebookLM was renamed Gemini Notebook in July 2026. Pricing works identically under both names. Numbers below were checked against Google's own plan pages in late July 2026; Google adjusts tiers, so treat the shapes as stable and the exact figures as subject to change.

What free actually gets you

The free tier is a working tier, not a demo: 100 notebooks, 50 sources each, 50 chat questions a day and 3 Audio Overviews a day. Fifty questions is a lot of asking; three podcasts a day is more than most people generate in a week. If you are a student with one or two active courses, or a researcher on one project at a time, there is a good chance you never need to pay. Where the ceiling bites is scale: dissertations with hundreds of sources, heavy daily use across projects, or teams. Our free vs paid breakdown goes deeper.

The paid tiers — what each plan buys

• Google AI Plus (~$4.99/mo) — the quiet middle option most articles skip: roughly 200 notebooks, 100 sources per notebook, 200 chats and 6 Audio Overviews a day, plus model and storage upgrades. The right buy when free is *almost* enough.
• Google AI Pro (~$19.99/mo) — around 500 notebooks, 300 sources per notebook, 500 chats and 20 Audio Overviews a day, plus 2 TB storage and the stronger Gemini models. The default "I use this professionally" tier.
• Google AI Ultra (from ~$99.99/mo) — 500–600 sources per notebook, thousands of chats, 100+ Audio Overviews daily, and the one NotebookLM-specific perk money can buy: exports without the watermark. Aimed at heavy professional use; most readers of this page do not need it.

Note what you are really buying: every plan is a bundle. The NotebookLM limits arrive next to Gemini app upgrades, Veo video generation and Drive storage — which is why there is no "NotebookLM subscription" line item anywhere, and why cancelling happens in Google One, not in NotebookLM.

The student discount, honestly

Google ran a genuinely good student offer: 12 months of AI Pro free with SheerID verification. It closed to new signups on January 31, 2026, and by spring the door was shut in every region — despite a long tail of articles still describing it as available. If you enrolled before the deadline you keep your year. If you did not, what is left today: the ordinary one-month AI Pro trial, and a free tier that covers most coursework on its own. When a new student promotion appears we will update this page; be suspicious of any site currently promising the free year.

Deciding in practice

1. Count your actual ceiling hits. Pay only for the limit you hit weekly — one over-limit day a month is not worth $240 a year.
2. Check the ~$5 tier before the $20 one. Doubling free limits at a quarter of Pro's price covers a surprising share of "free is almost enough" cases.
3. Month-to-month beats annual here. Exam seasons and project crunches are spiky; subscribing for the heavy months and dropping back costs less than a year-round plan.
4. The watermark alone is not worth Ultra. If clean exports are your only reason, our free watermark remover handles it in the browser.
